Workshops & Tutorials

Two workshops / tutorials will be held on the first day of the Linked Pasts 5 conference, one on OntoMe developped by the dataforhistory.org consortium, and one the World-Historical Gazetteerrun by University of Pittsburgh World History Center

Places are limitated to XX and  on first come first served basis: please email linkedpasts5@sciencesconf.org if you would like to register.

OntoMe - https://ontome.dataforhistory.org/

Facilitator: Vincent Alamercery - LARHRA - UMR 5190 - École normale supérieure de Lyon

To support the process of sharing geo-historical data, produced in local repositories, with other resources available on the semantic web, the Digital research team of the LARHRA has developed an Ontology management environment (OntoME) as an online application that offers research projects the ability to manage their ontologies (data models). This is done in a collaborative and open way, supporting the use of RDF technologies.

OntoME is a key element in the international Data for History consortium, founded in 2017 at the initiative of the LARHRA with the aim of improving geo-historical data interoperability in the semantic web.

Designed for any object-oriented structured data model, OntoME makes it easy to build, manage and align your ontology.

In this tutorial, we will show how to use OntoME to:

  • Learn ontologies such as CIDOC CRM and its extensions by easily browsing through classes and properties.
  • Create classes and properties for your project in a collaborative framework using your own namespace and align them with standard ontologies to ensure interoperability.
  • Create your application profile that reproduces your envisaged model as a coherent set of classes and properties from different published namespaces to use it in your favourite virtual research environment or homemade database.

OntoME is an open access application. Registration is only required to create a new project or to configure the application. In the context of open science, models are published under CC-BY-SA 4.0 license.

A World Historical Gazetteer Workshop - http://whgazetteer.org/

Facilitator: Karl Grossner - University of Pittsburgh World History Center

World Historical Gazetteer (WHG) is a new web-based software platform that will provide several important services and features for historical researchers, including publication of historical place attestations as Linked Open Data with persistent URIs, reconciliation of place records to existing place name authorities such as Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names (TGN) and Wikidata, and the linking of multiple contributed attestations for places asserted to be matches within a union index. All data is searchable and downloadable via a graphical interface and API.
With the recent release of a v0.2 beta release, the project team has begun offering future users and contributors hands-on introductions to the platform in workshop settings. These sessions also serve to provide feedback to a development process that is still ongoing.
We propose a 2- to 3-hour workshop for the Linked Pasts symposium in Bordeaux, 11-13 December 2019. After a brief explanation of the project’s conceptual framework, goals, and status, participants will explore WHG features directly, including searching and browsing of place and trace data, and the contribution workflow, from upload and validation to augmentation via reconciliation, to submission for accessioning into the WHG index.
